Variety Pairs
In the New Year the Club is introducing a new annual Competition.
It will start on Monday January 9th 2012 and will run every month until December 2012. It will usually be played on the second Monday of each month – but watch the Club’s calendar as it could change.
For example in April 2012 it will be on the first Monday that month as the second is Easter Monday when the Club will be closed. Each month the competition will be run as a one winner event using either a Howell or a Scrambled Mitchell movement.
The idea is that each month you will play with a different partner. You do not have to but only the first time you play with a particular partner in the calendar year will count towards your annual score. Also playing with a non member or visitor will not count.
Points will be awarded to pairs coming in the first 10 places with 10 points for the winners, 9 points for the runners up, 8 points for the third place and so on down to 1 point for tenth place omitting any non-qualifying pairs. Half points (aggregated as appropriate) will be awarded to tying pairs.
The winner of the Trophy will be the member who scores the highest total in the year taking into account his or her 9 best monthly scores. So it will not matter if you cannot play every month - indeed perhaps not even 9 times if you can score highly enough in the others!
Members are encouraged to try and arrange games with different partners for each month in which they hope to play next year as soon as possible. To help with that a card will be provided by the Club showing all the dates of the competition for 2012 which they can then complete. These will be available very soon.
The new trophy for the Variety Pairs competition has been donated in memory of Peter Crozier by his family. His wife Patricia writes: Cricket and games were a great feature of Peter’s life. He came from a card playing family, learnt bridge at an early age and it became a life- long interest and pleasure. He joined Beckenham in the 1970s with his partner Phil Palmer who, in a tribute to Peter wrote that ‘he was the best partner I ever had, he was always fond of end plays and has finally made the last’.
Peter read history at King’s College London, and enjoyed a successful career in the Inland Revenue.
